What to Expect During a Therapy Consultation at Better Minds Counselling

Starting therapy for the first time or reaching out to a new therapist can feel intimidating. You may have questions about what will happen during your first appointment, whether you will feel comfortable with your therapist, or whether therapy will actually be helpful for what you are experiencing.

At Better Minds Counselling in London, Ontario, we understand that finding the right therapist is an important part of the therapy process. That's why your initial consultation is an opportunity to get to know your therapist, discuss what brings you to counselling, learn more about their approach, and ask any questions or share any concerns you may have about starting therapy.

What Is a Therapy Consultation?

A therapy consultation is an initial conversation between you and a therapist designed to help determine whether the therapist may be a good fit for your needs.

You do not need to have everything figured out before your consultation. You may know exactly what you want to work on, or you may simply know that you haven't been feeling like yourself and would like some support.

Your therapist will help guide the conversation and give you an opportunity to explain what has been happening and what you would like help with.

What Happens During a Therapy Consultation?

Every therapist has their own style and approach to counselling, so your experience may look slightly different depending on which therapist you meet with.

At Better Minds Counselling, our therapists have different areas of experience, training, therapeutic approaches, and personalities. This means there is no single "Better Minds approach" to therapy.

During your consultation, your therapist will typically:

Learn More About What Brings You to Therapy

One of the most important parts of the consultation is understanding why you are reaching out for support.

Your therapist may ask questions about what you have been experiencing, how long it has been affecting you, and how it is impacting your day-to-day life, relationships, work, school, or overall well-being.

You do not need to have the perfect words to explain what is happening. Your therapist can help you work through what feels most important to discuss.

Explain Their Approach to Therapy

Each therapist at Better Minds Counselling has a unique approach to therapy.

Depending on your therapist and your goals, they may use approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), EMDR, trauma-informed therapy, solution-focused therapy, attachment-based approaches, play therapy, couples therapy, or other evidence-informed therapeutic techniques.

Your therapist will explain their approach and discuss what therapy may look like based on your specific concerns.

This is an important part of the consultation because therapy is not one-size-fits-all. Different people respond to different therapeutic approaches, and your therapist will work with you to determine what may be most appropriate for your needs.

Answer Your Questions About Therapy

Your consultation is also your opportunity to ask questions.

You may want to know:

  • What will we talk about during therapy?

  • How often should I attend?

  • How long are sessions?

  • What type of therapy do you use?

  • Will I have homework or exercises between sessions?

  • How long does therapy usually take?

  • What if I don't know what to talk about?

  • Can therapy help with my specific concern?

  • What happens if I become emotional during a session?

  • How will I know whether therapy is working?

There is no "wrong" question to ask. If something is making you feel uncertain about therapy, your consultation is a good time to bring it up.

Address Any Concerns You Have About Starting Therapy

It is completely normal to feel nervous about beginning counselling.

Some people worry about being judged, becoming emotional, not knowing what to say, or feeling uncomfortable talking about personal experiences with someone they have never met.

Others may have had a previous experience with therapy that wasn't helpful and may be unsure whether counselling will be different this time.

Your therapist can talk through these concerns with you and help you understand what you can expect from the therapy process.

Do I Have to Know Exactly What I Want to Work On?

No.

You do not need a diagnosis, a treatment plan, or a clear understanding of what is wrong before reaching out to a therapist.

Sometimes you may know that you are struggling with anxiety or depression. Other times, you may be experiencing relationship difficulties, stress, burnout, grief, trauma, parenting challenges, or changes in your life without knowing exactly what you need.

Part of your therapist's role is helping you better understand what is bringing you to therapy and identifying goals together.

How Do I Know If a Therapist Is the Right Fit?

Finding the right therapist is about more than finding someone who treats a particular concern.

You may feel more comfortable with a therapist who is structured and goal-oriented, while someone else may prefer a therapist who takes a more conversational approach. Your therapist's personality, communication style, experience, and therapeutic approach can all influence your experience.

During your consultation, pay attention to how comfortable you feel communicating with the therapist and whether you feel heard, respected, and understood.

It is okay if the first therapist you meet is not the right fit. Finding a therapist who feels appropriate for you is an important part of successful therapy.

What If I Don't Feel Comfortable Right Away?

You don't have to expect an instant connection.

It can take time to feel comfortable talking about personal experiences, particularly if this is your first experience with counselling.

Your therapist understands that building trust and a therapeutic relationship takes time. You can also let your therapist know if you have concerns about the pace, approach, or direction of therapy.

Open communication about your experience can actually become an important part of the therapeutic process.

Your First Step Toward Therapy Doesn't Have to Feel Perfect

Reaching out for therapy can be a significant first step. You may feel hopeful, nervous, uncertain, or even a combination of all three.

At Better Minds Counselling in London, Ontario, our goal is to make the process as comfortable and transparent as possible. Our therapists have different backgrounds, training, personalities, and therapeutic approaches, but each consultation provides you with an opportunity to understand how that therapist works and determine whether they may be a good fit for you.

Your consultation is a chance to talk about what brings you to therapy, learn about your therapist's approach, ask questions, and discuss any concerns you have about counselling.

You don't need to know exactly what to say. You simply need to take the first step.
